EuroIA talk: on why we should NOT focus on user experience

Nov 5 2010

EuroIA is the premier European event on Information Architecture: three days of workshops, presentations, panels, and networking opportunities for information architects from across Europe and around the world.

This year, one of Emakina/Architects‘ specialists, Koen Claes, was invited to come share his insights on user experience, and presented a case on why we should NOT focus on it.

A terrific presentation that has been really well received by the audience. If you didn’t get the chance to be there, here it is

Drama 2.0: towards a new interactive narration form

Oct 15 2010

“Once upon a time…” For centuries on end, storytelling hasn’t changed by one comma. The rules of the game were unchanging and intangible: one needed unity of time, space and action. Today, under the pressure of digital media, these fundamental principles of storytelling are being shattered.

Facebook wins Places in the geo-localised marketing race

Sep 21 2010

Facebook has officially announced the launch of its localisation service, called Places.

The launch was more than just the launch of a simple feature: it is also a way to move the geo-localised social functionalities out of its early adopter status and moving them into the mass market segment.
Facebook has been smart and has set up a partnership with the main geo-localised social players (foursquare, Gowalla, Yelp and Booyah) allowing them to use Facebook Places within their application. Read the rest of this entry »

Shopkick gives multichannel experience a kick!

Sep 14 2010

It was hard to miss the launch of Shopkick (New York Times, Techcrunch or KNTV Press Here).

This mobile application, now available on iPhone and soon on Android, allows you to gather points, called kickbucks, for each action you do (enter a store, scan a product) and to receive promotions in the store.

At first, it seems quite a traditional concept: gain customer knowledge to offer a better service and offer an incentive in the point-of-sale for the supplier, whereas the customer benefits from promotions.

Reminder – World Usability Day on 13th November 2008

Nov 4 2008

There are some empty seats left for the Belgian Usability Day that the folks from our strategic cell organise on 13th November in Brussels.

This year’s program looks quite exciting with the presence of two Belgian usability experts on stage: Peter Van Dijck (author of “Information Architecture for Designers: Structuring Websites for Business Success”) and Joannes Vandermeulen (founder of design and usability consultancy Namahn). Two other presentations are also worth attending: Audrey Benoit, head of e-business at Brussels Airlines, will explain how usability boosted sales on Brussels Airlines.com, while our colleague Amandine from Groupe Reflect will bring a fresh – and French – look at the concept of digital identity.

Info and registration here.

Oct 6 2008

Last week end Emakina attended the European Information Architecture Summit 2008 in Amsterdam. This event is the biggest one at European level in this discipline. More than 300 experts mostly from Europe but also from USA were present.

Emakina was massively present at this event. 12 Emakinians from Design is Dead, Groupe Reflect, The Reference and Emakina Brussels had the opportunity to discover the latest trends and most interesting evolutions in the information architecture field.

Our network also present in front stage with my keynote about “building social web experience”

This presentations shows some of our key learnings about how we can build community website and social networks.

Information architecture is really much more making sitemap. It groups many discipline like usability, user centred design, service design, user experience… with connexions to any type of digital and even non digital channel.

The IA community is very dynamic and is addressing more and more multi channel experience issues. More and more, all studies try to focus on designing valuable experiences for your customer using all the possible digital devices.

The whole IA community is really moving in interesting directions and we felt confident as Emakina is embracing this approach since years.
